About Us

The Centre for Technology, Innovation, and Economic Research (CTIER) was established in 2015 to raise the level of debate and awareness among policymakers, industry, and researchers in India about the essential role of technical capability in economic development, and how it is best fostered. CTIER aims to inform policymaking based on high-quality empirical economic research and impact higher education in India. Over the years since its inception, CTIER has become the foremost think tank for innovation in India.

Why CTIER?

Technical progress accounts for over half the economic growth of Europe, North America and East Asia over the last two hundred years. South Korea and India had almost the same per capita GDP in 1960 while China and India had the same per capita GDP in 1980. Now South Korea is fifteen times richer and China five times.
For India to become a USD 20 trillion economy by 2047, we need to grow 8% annually. To achieve this, technology and innovation must be at the core of India’s economic agenda. A deeper understanding of technical change, and how it originates is of critical importance to India. This would require a transformation of R&D in the Indian industry and a transformation of public funding of research to build the talent pipeline for the future
At CTIER, we have been contributing to this area and continuously highlighting the importance of viewing the Indian economy through the lens of innovation and technology. As India’s economic rise continues, the rapid pace of technological change globally and rising geopolitical uncertainties has meant the need for greater informed engagement with stakeholders in India’s innovation ecosystem has grown multi-fold.

Vision

The Centre aims to facilitate high quality economic research, provide a platform to inform policy making and impact higher education in India. A special emphasis shall be on the Economics of Innovation and Technology.

Mission

The Centre will continuously strive to improve the quality of economic research output in India through training, mutual engagement and debate, and interactions with various stakeholders – educational institutions, researchers, practitioners, industry and the government.

CTIER is incorporated under Section 8 of the Companies Act, 2013 in India.
